SonicWall found that 91% of healthcare breaches in 2024 will involve ransomware. This highlights the urgent need for improved cybersecurity and strong partnerships with MSPs/MSSPs.
Milpitas, California, September 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — SonicWall today announced the 2024 SonicWall Threat Overview focused exclusively on the healthcare industry. This is based on extensive research from SonicWall Capture Labs. The report revealed that at least 14 million patients in the United States have fallen victim to malware breaches in this area. Despite SonicWall sensors successfully stopping more than 26,000 attacks, this finding shows that healthcare organizations remain prime targets for ransomware due to their critical operations and potential for financial gain. I am emphasizing that.
Many healthcare organizations operate with limited cybersecurity resources and often rely on outdated technology, making them vulnerable to ransomware attacks. SonicWall also determined that an astonishing 60% of vulnerabilities are exploited against Microsoft Exchange.
“Understanding the threat landscape is critical for the healthcare industry to effectively defend against cyberattacks,” said Doug McKee, executive director of threat research at SonicWall. “As ransomware evolves and targets sensitive patient data, organizations need to stay informed of new threats and vulnerabilities. Equipped with knowledge and robust security measures, healthcare providers can better protect critical operations and ensure the safety of patient information.”
Disruption of access to patient data and healthcare systems can have life-threatening consequences. As a result, healthcare organizations are more likely to pay a ransom to quickly restore operations. In 2024, ransomware was used in 91% of malware-related data breaches in the healthcare sector, and Lockbit emerged as one of the most notorious ransomware groups targeting this industry.
The increasing digitization of medical records and telemedicine services further expands the attack surface, making it nearly impossible for healthcare organizations to respond alone. Managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs) must play an important role in the healthcare industry by providing expertise and resources that many organizations lack.
As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, MSPs/MSSPs can implement robust security measures, monitor systems in real-time, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. A proactive approach to cybersecurity ultimately improves the healthcare ecosystem by enabling healthcare providers to protect sensitive patient data, minimize downtime, and focus on delivering quality care. Strengthens overall resilience.
