New fund supports out-of-pocket costs for home care services and durable medical equipment

Germantown, Maryland, December 16, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — HealthWell Foundation®, an independent nonprofit charity providing financial assistance to uninsured Americans, supports out-of-pocket costs for cancer home care services and durable medical equipment. (DME)). Through this fund, HealthWell will provide one-time grants of up to 12 months. $2,000 Helps cover the cost of home health services or DME provided by Medicare-certified providers. Eligible patients must have a household income up to 500% of the federal poverty level and be a current or past recipient of HealthWell Oncology Fund grants.

HealthWell recognizes that cancer patients often require specialized equipment and services during and after treatment. Home care services and DME help patients manage their condition in the comfort of their own home and surrounded by their loved ones.

“Cancer can pose a challenge for families that goes beyond hospitalization and outpatient treatment.” Don RhysMD, Healthwell Foundation Director. “Providing subsidies for home care removes barriers and allows families to keep their loved ones safe and comfortable. Caregivers of cancer patients can help purchase equipment and pay for home services. These expenses can be overwhelming.Through the Fund, HealthWell can help ease this burden so that families can focus on caring for their loved ones.”

“More than 2 million new cancer cases are predicted for the first time in 2024, which equates to approximately 5,500 cancer diagnoses per day. The resulting economic fallout is well-documented. When cancer occurs, a person can easily go into debt,” he said. Arif KamalChief Patient Officer, American Cancer Society; “At the American Cancer Society, we believe no one should have to worry about missing out on paying for cancer treatment or receiving life-saving treatment because they face financial barriers. We applaud HealthWell for launching this initiative to fund home care services and durable medical equipment so more people can focus on their health and daily life in a familiar environment. This sense of security and normalcy can be invaluable during cancer treatment.”
