Today, we are proud to announce that HCA Healthcare collected 21,137 pounds of unused and expired medications during the 6th annual “Crush the Crisis” National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This exceeds last year's total and is the highest amount our organization has ever raised during our annual event. Since launching “Crush the Crisis” as a corporate initiative in 2019, HCA Healthcare has now collected a total of more than 88,600 pounds of medical supplies.

“We are amazed by the results of this year’s Crash the Crisis. Our colleagues showed up in their communities to remove unwanted drugs before they got into the wrong hands. It shows how much HCA Healthcare cares about the communities it serves.”

HCA Healthcare facilities across the country partner with local law enforcement agencies to help communities safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired medications. An estimated 14.5 million doses of medicines were collected at more than 125 collection points. HCA Healthcare's “Crush the Crisis” event was held in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and collected 629,953 pounds of medications.

The HCA Healthcare facilities that contributed to the most drug recalls during this year's event are:

HCA Healthcare uses data from approximately 43 million patient encounters each year to continuously improve care. The organization uses the science of “big data” to reduce prescription drug misuse and transform pain management in surgical, emergency, and other medical settings.

Enhanced Surgical Recovery (ESR): A multimodal approach to pain management using preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative interventions to optimize outcomes. HCA Healthcare's ESR program has demonstrated significant improvements in surgical recovery and patient satisfaction, including reduced opioid use. Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS): Aims to stop increased opioid-related addiction, misuse, and mortality by making prescribing more difficult. Enable drug seekers to doctor shop and change prescriptions. Physicians have access to aggregated electronic health records, providing data that helps them prescribe opioids wisely.
