As the rest of the 2028 class and BU settle into the centre of the second semester, we would like to highlight the important physical and mental health services available through the Student Health Services (SHS). Take it from me as a student health ambassador and a senior Sgt. Don't wait until your fourth year to use SHS. From experience, I often invalidated how I felt.
During my first year, I never thought that appointments at SHS would be free, except for the costs of lab jobs, medications and other treatments. I wish I had known this sooner. Because it gave me the space to talk to my healthcare provider about how I feel.
FYI: If you have any questions about vessels or health insurance, please contact the on-campus insurance resources. Insurance can be complicated. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
2. SHS will be the first stop for your physical and mental health needs.
Even if SHS does not offer a specific service, you can refer to healthcare teams beyond BU. That being said, let me explain what kind of care you can get with SHS.
Primary Care: Whether you're cold, injury, or need a vaccine, SHS can keep secrets on your concerns. Sexual Health Services: SHS offers STI testing, emergency contraception and gender-affirming healthcare. If you need help, they provide 24/7 emergency lines and fast secret care. The average waiting time for your initial booking is only 3 days. This is compared to external mental health services over a range of 14-65 days.
FYI: SHS is a confidential service with staff who really want to hear your concerns and support you. Reaching out has no negative consequences.
3. Explore additional resources for your happiness!
BU provides many resources to support students' health and wellness. Here are some of my favorites:
This is just the beginning! I would recommend that everyone explore these resources and maximize what BU has to offer. Remember, don't hesitate to seek the support you deserve. BU offers a wealth of services designed to help you thrive.
