SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (Wand) – Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill Friday to protect nursing home residents from retaliation if they report abuse or neglect.
The Act allows residents to file a civil suit against the nursing home if they are threatened or face retaliation for reporting lawsuits arising within the facility.
Nursing home residents will earn up to two years to file a lawsuit against the facility, licensee, or employee in the face of retaliation.
“We also need nursing homes to inform residents annually of their rights to retaliation and the process of filing such complaints,” said Sen. Lakesia Collins (D-Chicago). “Finally, the law requires in-service training designed to prevent retaliatory actions.”
The law was handed over by the Senate by 48-2 votes and received approval from 89 of the 118 state representatives.
House Bill 2474 will come into effect on January 1st.
