WAVERLY, Neb. (KOLN) – Residents of a nursing home in Waverly were evacuated Monday morning, according to Waverly Fire and Rescue.
Emergency crews were called to Mulberry in Waverly for a burst water main around 5:45 a.m. The property is on the northwest side of town, near 137th Avenue and Oldfield Street.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said a pipe burst and caused part of the building’s ceiling above the nurses’ station to collapse after workers moved 30 patients from the facility to the Waverly Community Foundation building.
Waverly Fire Rescue receives assistance from all volunteer fire departments in Lancaster County, as well as additional fire departments from Cass County and Waverly schools.
Deputies are unsure how much of the facility was damaged, but Sheriff Ben Houchin said there was about an inch of water on the floor of the building. Sheriff Houchin said there are no long-term plans for residents at this time, as the facility will likely be uninhabitable for the time being.
No injuries were reported. It is unclear what caused the water pipe to burst.
