Congressional Republican plans to cut health care to fund tax gifts for the ultra-rich people will be harmful to care for everyone

DAVIS, Calif. – On Friday, Yol adanana, the patient advocacy group for Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04), Chief Action Officer/Chief Community Health Officer, UC Davis Health Dr. Bruce Lee Hall, interim deputy prime minister of Europe County Supervisor Sheila Allen and patient advocate Kate Radish. The speaker warned that Congressional Republican plans to cut at least $880 billion from the budget funding Medicaid to fund tax credits for the ultra-rich people would destroy local access to care for everyone.

“Congressional Republicans require $880 billion in healthcare budget cuts that cannot be done without destroying Medicaid, and the destruction of Medicaid will hurt everyone,” Thompson said. “A third of California's healthcare comes from Medicaid. Without this funding, hospitals and medical centers in our community will be forced to cut or shut down services completely. This means that everyone will lose access to care, all in order to promote the gift of taxes for the wealthiest people in our country.”

background

In February, Congressional Republicans passed a partisan budget bill that directed the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare and Medicaid, to cut spending by $880 billion. Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Bureau We then analyzed the budget and confirmed that the committee would not be able to meet the required level of spending reductions by Congressional Republicans without a deep reduction in Medicaid. Millions of people will lose full coverage and those who remain covered will have fewer benefits and fewer providers available.

The cuts that Congressional Republicans proposed healthcare and nutrition programs in the budget bill will be the near-precise amount of savings the parties need to implement a tax bill that offers massive tax cuts that earn more than $743,000 a year with businesses.
