“My dad was diagnosed with cancer and it really made me want to enter the medical field. This program really made me want to be an ultrasoundist,” Bough said.
The high school senior is taking part in the Discover Summer Enrichment program launched by Lakeland Regional Health.
The immersive, four-week program allows students to explore emergency medicine and various medical specialties using real activities such as virtual life-size corpses. Bough said that practical experience helped her home to the best medical profession for her.
“Ultrasound is the first step to understanding what's wrong with that patient. It's the most important thing, one of the important things. I honestly think it's really cool,” Bough said.
As Lake Land Regional is one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, the goal is to build career preparation and address the shortage of health professionals in the area.
“It's about dealing with that access issue, and making sure that community members can quickly reach their providers when they need it. This is another pipeline,” said Lawrence Springfield, Local Community Health Director at Lakeland.
The program ended Friday with a graduation and a white court ceremony at Southeastern University. Start the pass for the next generation of healthcare leaders.
