Second graders at Union Town

Some students at RW Clark Elementary School in Uniontown made special delivery Thursday, dropping knot blankets into personal care facilities.

It's always a thrilling day when second-year students have the opportunity to leave the classroom.

“They are excited to give back to their community and share their love and kindness,” Teacher Mikaila Golden said.

Golden is only in his second year teaching at Clark, but that window is still enough to make an impact. Sophomore Rilynn Stewart knows that.

“She has given us more of a friendship and more of an inspiration,” Stewart said.

Stewart is one of the Golden students learning how to become a good citizen by giving gifts to patients in a local nursing home.

“We have studied a variety of ways that citizens can give back to their communities,” Golden said.

And, in a sense, Golden is also giving back to the school. It was her alma mater.

“I used some of my veteran colleagues, some of the teachers I had when I went here,” she said.

Then the idea came up to make a knot blanket.

“We enjoy sharing love, kindness and friendship,” Stewart said.

They did it for a delivery date at Beechwood Court on Thursday.

“It touches the home for me. A few students have parents who work on the other side of the nursing home,” Golden said.

Students also serenaded several songs with residents. Students didn't just learn how to give back. They learned teamwork too – music in Golden's ears.

“It made me feel pretty good,” she said.
