Alice Caldwell, staff RN at Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, was voted unanimously by the highly reliable office as the Great Catch Award winner for 2025 Quarter 1.
Caldwell received the award for demonstrating extraordinary vigilance in observing medical changes in the appearance of veterans. By promptly notifying appropriate health care providers, she has made a significant contribution to the prevention of potential adverse events.
Caldwell has been a dedicated VA employee for over 13 years and consistently demonstrates his commitment to patients. On a typical working day, she received a notification that a new veteran would enter her care. As part of a standard procedure for new patients, Caldwell conducted a thorough assessment of veteran skin. During her examination, she noticed some discoloration and the possibility of one deformation of the veteran limb. Recognizing the importance of a quick and accurate assessment, she immediately contacted a doctor to assess the situation.
Caldwell practiced the principle of high reliability of a “duty of speaking” as demonstrated motivation and care to communicate with providers. Caldwell's aggressive approach was to win her the “Great Catch Award.” The award acknowledges her hard work and dedication to ensuring veterans receive health care in a safe and caring environment. The Patient Safety Team and the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS) leadership team truly appreciate their efforts to support outstanding, veteran-centric care.
When asked about how she felt she was recognized at the award, Caldwell said, “It's a privilege to win an award for a big catch, but being selected and nominated this quarter. was much more important to me. I was surprised when I first opened the email and saw my name being recognized. I recall an incident with a veteran, but I The behavior was driven solely by the desire to act in the patient's best interests.”
NF/SGVHS is fortunate to have employees like Caldwell. Her unwavering dedication exemplifies our unwavering commitment to providing the best possible care to all veterans.
