Orlando Health Hospital Care at Home has made history as the country's first program to receive the Outstanding Silver Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurse, recognizing its groundbreaking approach to delivering keen hospital-level care directly in patients' homes.
The program has served more than 2,000 patients in Central Florida since its launch in February 2023, but is available to Orlando Health patients who meet certain clinical criteria determined by emergency departments and hospital staff. Orlando Health is one of 186 hospitals in the United States that have been recognized by the Beacon Award. Recipients demonstrate effective systems for optimal patient care and a positive and safe work environment.
“We are grateful to be the first hospital program to be recognized by the Silver Beacon Award, recognizing the dedication of our nursing team and the trust of patients in this advanced healthcare model.”
The Orlando Health Program is the first in Central Florida to be approved for Medicare and Medicaid patients and now accepts participating private insurance.
“It is an honor to be recognized for an innovative line of health services that allow patients to receive personalized hospital-level care in the comfort of their home,” said Siddharaj G. Shah, Sher, Medical and Quality Director, Orlando Health Hospital care, Sher, Maryland.
To qualify, the patient's home must be in a safe environment within a determined geographical catchment in case emergency care is required.
“The award honors the nurses' commitment to providing the same level of high quality and caring care in patients' homes at hospitals,” said Wendy Cooper, NE-BC, Nursing Operations and Orlando Health Hospital Care.
Conditions that can be safely taken care of through a home-based program include, but are not limited to, cellulitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, urinary tract infections, heart failure, pneumonia, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, acute pancreatitis, multiple sclerosis flare-up, proessisitis, and steatosis.
Portable Technology connects patients to the Orlando Health Patient Care Hub for 24/7 remote monitoring and virtual care by nurses and providers.
Patients receive face-to-face care daily from members of the nursing team, along with visits from virtual providers and consultants. Mobile imaging, labs, nutrition services and treatments are delivered as ordered.
