More than 100 home care companion workers have been awarded a share of nearly $355,000 in unpaid wages and damages after a U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division investigation into two south Louisiana home care providers under shared ownership. will receive.

Investigators determined that SafeCare LLC of Franklin misclassified many of its employees as independent contractors and paid them a flat rate for all hours worked, including overtime in excess of 40 hours per week. In New Iberia, the department found that ApexCare LLC did not allow six employees to work overtime in excess of 40 hours per week.

Specifically, the department will seek liquidated damages equal to $176,082 in unpaid wages from SafeCare to the affected employees and liquidated damages from ApexCare to the affected employees. recovered liquidated damages equal to $1,396 in unpaid wages to resolve violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
