Kaiser Permanente’s last nursing home in California will officially close in mid-November.
Kaiser said San Leandro nursing homes have seen a steady decline in patient numbers over the past decade, and a recent ProPublica report found that on average, fewer than a quarter of the beds are in use.
The health care company began closing facilities in June. The last patients were discharged by the end of July. Kaiser said, “Our teams worked closely with patients and their families to ensure a safe and smooth discharge for everyone.”
The company said patients are increasingly preferring in-home care from family members or its home care program, and patients who are unable to return home are being transferred to other facilities in the area.
The San Leandro nursing home employs 249 people, but Kaiser has said it is working with them and the union to find other jobs within the health care company.
