Governments are stepping up efforts to improve sustainability amid implementation risks.
According to BMI, healthcare systems and medical device manufacturers are expected to face several challenges in implementing sustainability measures as the industry moves towards this trend.
One notable challenge in health systems is the high initial cost of transitioning to sustainable practices and technologies, which can strain budgets, especially in resource-constrained settings.
“However, the long-term savings and environmental benefits may justify this investment,” the report says.
Resistance to change among professionals and managers is also a potential barrier, but comprehensive training programs and clear communication will hopefully alleviate these concerns over time.
Meanwhile, governments are stepping up efforts to improve sustainability in line with global environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Countries such as Australia, Japan and India have introduced initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare and medical device sectors.
“ESG targets include implementing regulations aimed at reducing emissions, minimizing resource use and ensuring product safety,” the report added.
