ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) – Healthcare industry leaders and union representatives gathered at the Albany Labor Temple on Saturday to protest federal funding cuts that they say threaten employment, patient care and essential services. The rally will be organized in response to policies and proposals from the Trump administration, claiming that they will have a negative impact on health services and workers.
Michael Fitzsimmons of the New York State Nurses Association highlighted the potential consequences of Medicaid decline and federal support. “Therefore, reductions in Medicaid or federal support will have a negative impact on the functioning of hospitals,” he said.
Democrat leader Paul Tonko, who attended the rally, warned of the broader implications of these cuts. “They represent a real threat to your work, the conditions of your work, and most importantly, to the patients, communities and consumers you serve,” Tonko said.
Industry leaders warned that federal government cuts could lead to longer waiting times for emergency care and delay patient care. Union representatives also expressed concern about the impact on members. Jessica Sweet of the U.S. Government Employees Federation criticized the administration's approach, saying “it's to dismantle trust in the government by starving people who make it work.”
Christina Crim of SEIU 1199 has urged solidarity between the unions to prevent losses of funds. “So, looking back at this moment we are facing, do you want to stand and be an individual who spoke your mind? Or do you want to be an individual who narrows down the whole life as torn from before you?” she asked.
The panelists vowed to continue to advocate for workers and the community in order to ensure sustainable support and resources.
