As CJ Wolf, professor of health care management at BYU Idaho, explains in this podcast, the first ICPG is beneficial for both skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and those who want to predict what will come with future ICPGs. Three more are currently scheduled to be published in 2025. Medicare Advantage, Hospital, Clinical Research Institute. Two additional ICPGs – Pharmaceutical Makers and Hospice – are also planned, but there are still publication dates that have not been decided yet.
There are several notable elements in the SNF ICPG. First, it involves intertwining patient compliance, quality of care and quality of life. Second, there is an entire supplement focused on refunds, increasing the level of scrutiny of billing compliance. Among other issues, it covers future payment systems, value-based payment models, Medicare Part D, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid managed care.
As for Anti-Kickback, ICPG provides specific examples close to home for skilled nursing facilities. These hot points include free or fair marketable goods and services, discounts, service and consumable arrangements, pharmacist relationships, care coordination, value-based care arrangements, and participating ventures.
Future ICPGs are expected to also focus on anti-kickback methods. CJ also hopes that future guidance will continue to focus on greater accuracy and quality of care.
