LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The industry that keeps us all healthy and healthy is still struggling to maintain its financial health.

People are surrounded by the healthcare industry. It impacts their jobs, health, and local economies.

“People underestimate the economic impact of mid-Michigan health care workers and health care presence,” said Margaret Dimond, president of the University of Michigan Health Region.

Dimond discussed this relationship at length with colleagues Thursday during a panel discussion at the Lansing Economic Club. She said they all face a universal struggle to remain in the workforce.

“I've seen a lot of nurses quit because of burnout, exhaustion and emotional exhaustion,” she says. “But we've also seen it in the technology field: phlebotomy techs, surgical techs, things like that.”

A shortage of health care workers can reduce quality and access to care. Brian Peters, CEO of the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, said it will ultimately affect workers in all industries.

“It's difficult for any company to want to find, hire and retain staff in areas that don't have access to emergency medical care,” he told News 10.

Michigan State University Health Sciences Senior Vice President Norman Hubbard said MSU plays a role in strengthening the industry by giving the next generation of health care workers the skills they need to succeed.

“We have people on site in every county in the state,” he said. “Whether it's Marquette or Flint, it's a different world. You can't learn that in a classroom. You have to go.

Beyond that, Hubbard said, MSU is also focused on developing new technologies that will help keep both health care workers and the people they treat healthy and make the community as a whole healthier. Ta.

It won't happen overnight, but healthcare leaders like Dimond, Peters and Hubbard believe that saving the industry starts with having the right conversations and trusting each other to find solutions. says.
