Since its opening in 1824, Hartford HealthCare's Living Institute has prioritized providing quality care and “ethical treatment” to patients and families. The institute's team is now introducing the concept of “radical recovery” to reshape behavioral health care.

Radical recovery means that behavioral health care becomes “much less coercive and more community-centered,” said Dr. McConlogue, director of psychiatry at the Institute of Living and director of psychiatry at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Juveed Skahera, the chief physician, explains. “Radical recovery is built on a foundation of co-designing care, increasing choice, and embracing the healing power of community,” he says.

This concept includes three principles supported by ten strategic objectives.

Integration — Integrating care to improve access. Integrating clinical, educational, and research missions. Integrating medical and recovery-based models. Liberation — co-designing care with patients, families, and communities. Reduce coercive practices. Promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Promote the health and growth of your staff. Innovation—integrate data and technology into your work. Mobilizing knowledge and promoting storytelling. We will advance innovation in real-time care.

The Institute of Living provides a wide range of behavioral health services, education, and training, and conducts research on behavioral health issues such as anxiety disorders, racial trauma, and community healing. The care team includes certified recovery specialists who have lived experience (or have family members who have lived experience).

One of the first mental health centers in the United States and one of the first hospitals in Connecticut, the institute provides high-quality care and focuses on moving from coping and symptom control to healing. We believe that fundamental recovery is about helping people heal before they experience it. crisis.
