Governor Brown signs laws requiring Indiana Hospitals to lower medical prices or confiscate nonprofit status

INDIANAPOLIS (WPTA) – Indiana Governor Mike Brown has signed a law requiring certain Indiana hospitals to lower prices or confiscate nonprofit status.

In January, House Bill 1004 was introduced at the 2025 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly.

The bill, written by Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne), aims to reduce state health costs, target Indiana's largest nonprofit hospitals, and reduce the statewide average or nonprofit prices, or enforce the benefits that come with it.

The proposed reductions for each hospital were as follows:

Ascension Cent Vincent: Reduce price by 40.5%Community Health Network: Reduce prices by 34%Deaconess Health System: Reduce Prices by 23%Franciscan Health: Reduce Prices by 30%IU Health: cut prices by 40.6%Parkview Health: Reduce prices by 40.8%

HB 1004 left the House of Representatives in late February.

The bill officially passed the Indiana Legislature on April 29th, the last day of the state's 2025 legislative meeting.

Until June 30, 2029, state nonprofit hospitals will obtain a comprehensive statewide below average and outpatient health care prices or lose their nonprofit status.
