ATLANTA – Emory Healthcare is launching a new community-centric initiative called Wellness Walkers, designed to promote physical activity, promote wellness and connect staff and neighbors to important health resources. Developed in collaboration with Northlake Mall, the programme will officially launch from 12pm to 2pm on Tuesday, March 11th and will discuss strategies for setting personal health goals at a special walk-and-talk event featuring athletic trainer Lisa Grey.
The Wellness Walkers program is open to the public and will showcase monthly health and wellness events on the second Tuesday of each month. Kick-off participants will receive blood pressure screenings, wellness resources, healthy food options and giveaways. Emory Healthcare has enhanced the mall's walking experience by adding distance markers and providing wallet-sized tracking cards to those who want to record their progress.
“At Emory Healthcare, we believe in meeting people where they are. We break barriers to healthcare and make wellness accessible to everyone,” says Byron Hunter, vice president of health impacts at Emory Healthcare. “Through the Wellness Walkers Initiative, we are creating new opportunities for residents and staff to move towards healthier lives, and deepening our connections with trusted experts and resources in Georgia's best academic health systems. This initiative is more than walking. It's about expanding access to healthcare and healthy living in ways that fit people's daily lives.”
To encourage participation, the first 50 subscribers of the kick-off event will receive a free T-shirt. Participants who sign up will also receive monthly emails with updates about upcoming speakers and events.
The monthly programme serves as an ongoing opportunity for Emory Healthcare and Northlake Mall to support both local communities and Emory Healthcare employees who use the mall for exercise. As part of a broader commitment to wellness, Wellness Walker is in line with Healthy Emory, an Emory-wide effort to promote employee health.
In collaboration with Eat Right Atlanta and Georgia Fresh for Less, Emory Healthcare's New Eat Right Farmers Market will also be on site during the kick-off event, providing fresh, affordable produce and taking charge of attendees on a wellness journey.
Tucker Mayor Frank Orman is expected to join community members in the launch event as he embarks on this new wellness initiative.
