Urbana, Illinois (Cand) – Urbana residents above retirement age say Champaign County is facing a shortage of skilled nursing beds. Skilled nursing facilities are designed for patients who require more intensive medical care and rehabilitation, as opposed to regular nursing homes. At a city council meeting on Monday night, members heard presentations from supporters for aging.

AAC representatives said they have launched an investigation with the Champaign-Barna Public Health District to assess the needs of the community.

“There are two counties throughout Illinois that are short beds. Livingston County is short nine beds, Champaign County is short 337.” They have to be a need and have to do more. I discovered it. “This issue is not gone, it's getting worse and needs to be resolved.”

Supporters said the shortage was due to an increase in residents above retirement age. Additionally, three nursing homes in the area have been closed over the past three years, and the AAC has also contributed significantly to this issue.

In their presentation, the AAC expressed that they were trying to work with I medical school at U. They also evaluate how services and alternative options can be provided to patients in all income groups. The AAC said they are talking to local healthcare providers and various community agencies to develop more reliable care systems for the most vulnerable groups.
