A Assembly subcommittee has criticized former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration’s response to COVID-19 in nursing homes. The report, released ahead of Gov. Cuomo’s scheduled testimony in Washington, D.C., examines the controversial March 25, 2020 order that required nursing homes to admit patients regardless of their COVID-19 status.
The report suggests that Governor Cuomo and his aides recognized the political risks of the policy and changed how nursing home deaths were reported. Federal health officials, including Seema Verma and Dr. Deborah Birx, also condemned the policy, saying it led to unnecessary deaths.
Cuomo, who is scheduled to testify on Tuesday, continues to defend the order, arguing that federal officials approved it, but the report highlights inconsistencies between New York state directives and federal guidelines and will bring increased scrutiny into his administration’s pandemic response.
