Comer asks DOJ to charge Cuomo for “calculated concealment” of nursing home deaths

The House Oversight Committee recommended criminal charges against former New York governor Andrew Cuomo after the investigation concluded that Congress lied to the legislature about the deaths of thousands of nursing homes in his state.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Kommer (R-KY) announced Monday that he was introducing Cuomo to the Justice Department for the second time after the department declined his request under the Biden administration.

Comer is seeking the charges after a New York audit that concluded that the Cuomo administration had presented data on nursing homes that hid the deaths of 4,100 elderly people in the Imperial state during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The chairman cited a parliamentary report released last year. This discovers that Cuomo lied to Congress about his role in the nursing home controversy.

“Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deception, and caught lying to Congress during an investigation by the elected subcommittee on the tragedy of a Covid-19 nursing home in New York.” “This was not a slip-up. It was a cover-up calculated by a man trying to protect himself from responsibility for the devastating loss of life in a nursing home in New York.”

“Let's be clear. Lies to Congress is a federal crime,” the chairman continued. “The House Oversight Committee is fully prepared to cooperate with the Department of Justice's investigation into Andrew Cuomo's actions and ensure he explains.”

The news comes as Democrat Cuomo picked up steam in a race with the mayor of New York City against incumbent Eric Adams, running as an independent. Cuomo, the latest voting show, has earned a wide range of leads against his major democratic challengers, showing an increase in public favor after resigning embarrassment from the governor's office in 2021 over allegations of sexual harassment. The Justice Department said it had concluded that in 2024 he had sexually harassed 13 state employees, Cuomo said he had denied it.

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi condemned the House Oversight Committee's latest introduction to Bondi as a “valuable press release” in comments to Washington examiners.

“This was nonsense last year and even more so now,” he said. “This kind of election interference and transparent attempts at law are violating its own policies, just as the DOJ constantly reminds people.”

Eric Adams said, “Fighting the corruption charges cited Quid Pro Quo 'Leaks

“The only point to doing this is politics, as these kinds of introductions, which were also made to Planned Parenthood, Hillary Clinton and Anthony Fauci, do not need to be resubmitted with the new administration,” Azzopardi continued.

The committee's latest lawsuit comes after the House elected subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic concluded in December that it had “deliberately and intentionally made a false statement” in connection with “a number of occasions” and “willfully and intentionally made a false statement.”

Several House Republicans representing the New York area celebrated Kommer's actions on Monday.
