Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas —
Have you visited your health care provider recently? If so, you may have noticed additional screening questions added to your check-in.
This is a result of the 59th Medical Wing's efforts to identify and address food insecurity in its patient population.
A 2023 RAND study found that 25.8% of military families suffered from food insecurity, which may have been exacerbated by the post-pandemic economy. Inadequate access to healthy, nutritious foods can have serious health consequences, including vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, and even mental health symptoms.
Therefore, the 59th MDW aimed to improve the health of its beneficiaries by identifying people with health-related barriers and connecting them to the great support resources available in their communities.
