atlanta – Sunday marked a significant milestone for children's health care in metro Atlanta, as Children's Health Atlanta moved 202 patients from its Eggleston campus to the newly opened Arthur M. Blank Hospital. The state-of-the-art facility, located just off Interstate 85 on North Druid Hills Road, has been under construction for more than four years and officially opened Sunday.
Construction on the 19-story building, which will be spread over 70 acres, began in February 2020 after the implosion of an old hotel that previously occupied the site. Serving the region's youngest and most vulnerable patients, the hospital is named after Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank. This was made possible by a donation of $200 million, the largest donation in the hospital's history.
“This hospital is 10 times larger than the Eggleston campus, so we desperately needed more capacity,” said a representative from Children's Healthcare. “In the past there were many days when there were no available beds, but now the new hospital has 446 beds, 116 more beds than the Eggleston campus.”

The transfer required 65 ambulances and helicopters to safely transport patients from the old facility to the new facility, and was completed by approximately 7 p.m.
Due to the large-scale transportation effort, officials warned drivers in the area to expect delays, especially on Uppergate Drive, Starvine Way, Claremont Road and I-85 frontage roads. Commuters were advised to take alternative routes to avoid traffic jams.
Fortunately, weather conditions did not affect the transfer, making for a smoother process as Atlanta's tiniest patients settled into their new home at Arthur M. Blank Hospital.
Eight-year-old Brittany Morales was the first patient moved into the room.
The new hospital will be equipped with the latest medical technology to ensure that Metro Atlanta's youngest residents receive state-of-the-art care.
