On April 24, 2025, Pepperdine Graziadio Business School held its 10th Healthcare Symposium. Focusing on the theme of “investment in health,” the event invited top financial and healthcare leaders to discuss opinions on new trends and investment strategies, as well as the evolving dynamics of private and public investment shaping the future of healthcare. California's 34th State Treasurer, Fiona Ma (MBA '00), served as keynote speaker at the symposium, exploring the California Health Facilities Financial Bureau program that supports healthcare innovation, infrastructure and access.
President Jim Gash
To hold the event, Pepperdine President Jim Gash (JD '93) reflected the crucial role in the shaping of society and emphasized the importance of investing our collective time, effort and resources to drive the industry forward. He said the symposium's mission is closely aligned with Pepperdine's own values, sharing that university founder George Pepperdine is a visionary businessman who prioritizes creating lasting and meaningful heritage in pursuing economic benefits.
“When we talk about usefulness in the world, when we talk about the good work that has been sought after, we will struggle to find jobs that are meaningful or important, both personally and as a community, rather than investing in the future of healthcare,” Gash said. “The people who are with us today are aware that investments not only lead to profits, but more importantly, health for all generations. You are a business person who knows that the true purpose of investment is human prosperity.”
Deborah Crown
Deborah Crown, dean of the Graziadio Business School, also welcomed attendees, introduced the symposium speakers, and took the stage to celebrate the notable achievements of existing leaders and innovators.
“This event is at the forefront of emphasizing and driving business insights and healthcare expertise not only as a strategic alliance, but also as a catalyst for transformative advances that redefine patient care, wellness, mental health and even accessibility landscapes.” “Navigating the complex web of challenges and opportunities that characterize a healthcare business, it reveals that the intersection of business and healthcare is not just a crossroads. Innovative solutions thrive, and the pursuit of excellence is intertwined with the well-being of individuals and communities.”
Fiona Ma and Gary Mangiophyco
In a discussion hosted by Gary Mangiofico, executive professor of management and leadership at Graziadio Business School, keynote speaker MA discussed the role of healthcare finance in the California Treasurer's office. She highlighted the challenge of ensuring equitable funding in rural and underserved areas, while supporting advances in innovative medical technology. Ma explained that the fundamental role of government is to provide protection to citizens, especially when they are most vulnerable.
“If the economy suddenly changes and you lose your job, then we in the government must pick up your unemployment insurance and your health care,” MA explained. “That's part of our mission. The government is a safety net that seeks to cover and provide those in the most needy, and access these services and programs is the most difficult thing to do.”
The MA also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, legislative advocacy, and the need for comprehensive solutions for healthcare access and infrastructure. While she highlights her difficulties, she frequently encounters as a treasurer, but Massachusetts is passionate about her work and finds a deep sense of fulfillment in dedicating her life to helping others.
“It's extremely rewarding to be able to help people and make a difference in our lives, regardless of the challenges or obstacles we face,” MA said. “We have the power to allocate money where our biggest needs are, and as civil servants, it is our duty to focus on the needs of the public and advocate for others. That's why I happen every day.”
