Watford City, ND (KUMV) – Watford City's Bucken Area Skills Center has exposed high school students to a variety of healthcare careers and programs.

Over 140 students from five different schools related to healthcare professionals explored the Health Sciences programme on Healthcare Industry Day.

“We learned about the CWE program, and I looked at being a nursing assistant as a high school student, and many of them were about how people had their experiences, how they chose the job, and what their work was like. I'm just listening to him talking about what's included: “Riley Carabaro, a freshman at Divide County High School, said.

Students also spoke with local universities and universities.

“It gives students the opportunity to step into the door, talk to the university, learn about all their healthcare experiences,” says Watford City High School senior. One Eldon Lambert explained.

Healthcare exhibitors at the event said it was a great way to connect with students.

“We love the Skills Center and just come here and connect with students and all the member schools,” said Taylor Kittelson, director of Western ND AHEC.

The event is intended to inspire the next generation of healthcare workers and address the industry's workforce shortage.

“This is the next generation of healthcare workers. Juried Lugseth, a teacher at Bakken Area Skills Center Health Sciences, said:

Many high school students are already taking the next step towards the future of healthcare.

“I have a CNA license and I'm really into babies and OBs. I actually become a job shadow on the OB floor in the hospital and see the baby come out, so it's pretty cool.” said Kaily Leach, a sophomore at Watford City High School.

And some are still exploring different careers.

“I want to be a nurse, but I don't know what kind of nurse I want to be,” explained Alya Norton, a sophomore at Watford City High School.

Through industry accreditation and employment shadow opportunities, BASC equips students with a future in healthcare.

The Skills Center offers a variety of job-based learning and training programs to students in the Bakken area.
