On July 2, 2025, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the creation of the DOJ-HHS False Claims Act Working Group, a high-level interagency initiative aimed at strengthening the government's civil enforcement law (FCA) in the health sector. While DOJ and HHS have been working together for a long time to combat fraud, the working group marks a formal, rigorously coordinated effort focusing on shocking areas of enforcement. Why is this important? The FCA is the government's primary tool for police fraud in federal programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and imposes sudden…
Nurses will treat millions more patients closer to home with the roll out of ‘neighbourhood health services’ across the country, according to the government, as part of its new 10 Year Health Plan. This article is a part of your HHCN+ Membership As the second Trump administration begins to reshape federal health care priorities, home-based care leaders are cautiously optimistic but sounding the alarm on certain key areas such as reimbursement and labor stability. Budget neutrality adjustments have been a “tragedy,” Medicaid budget cuts still loom large for patients and caregivers, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans require accountability and audits and surveys are set to only increase. While concerns shadow in-home care providers looking to improve access to care, light can still be seen through the darkness. The 80/20 rule is likely to be…

International healthcare recruitment practices by wealthy countries are a “rip-off”, according to a global body representing nurses, which cited figures suggesting billions are being saved through overseas staff. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) criticised the UK, Canada and other countries for failing to sufficiently compensate the countries from which they had recruited many nurses in recent years. The ICN’s chief executive, Howard Catton, has today repeated his call for the creation of an international fund to help support the development of countries exporting large numbers of nursing staff. “It feels like a rip-off… ‘we’ll give you a thousand or…
Newly qualified nurse Milda Ambra knew she had badly broken her ankle before she even had a chance to look at it. She had left work in Yorkshire to meet a friend to go bouldering – a form of rock climbing. After attempting a controlled fall from 3m above the ground, her ankle “shattered” into around 15 pieces. “It’s clear that the NHS infrastructure just isn’t made to support disabled nurses” Milda Ambra Months of recovery and major surgery followed, but the pain remained unbearable. Despite this, Ms Ambra was determined to continue her role as a mental health nurse…
