“This year is expected to be the year when AI agents are deployed,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. But what are AI agents and how do they apply to healthcare?

Several health technology companies are jumping at agents. One of the early entrants, Hippocratic AI has a lineup of AI “nurses” that allow the health system to deploy for specific workflows, including discussing cervical cancer screening and checking in ongoing care for patients with chronic kidney disease. The company also has agents targeting insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies.

Earlier this year, Innovaccer and Salesforce each announced a lineup of AI agents aimed at healthcare. But how common are agents in the healthcare system? The latest update to STAT+ Generic AI Tracker adds over 40 health systems, which are customers of these and other AI agent platforms.
