A North Carolina nursing home is being sued after an open wound from a dementia patient was allegedly invaded by a fly larvae, also known as Serious.
Bernice Mays, 81, was recovering after a Covid-19 match while living in a nursing home in Charlotte. Her time in bed caused pain in her heels. Four months later, the wound attracted the fly.
According to reports on WSOC-TV, Mays' grandson, Justin Waddell, discovered the injury and cited sanitation issues at the facility as a possible cause of intrusion, sought legal help.
This incident occurred in 2021. After warning the facility's operator, the University Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Waddell realized that staff were unable to take action to properly treat the wounds and improve cleanliness.
His allegations stated that the facility's medical director ordered the affected area, which had been cleaned with water and vinegar, but did not conduct the test.
The university nurse then sent Waddell a video of her grandmother's wounds, claiming he would be sent to the hospital soon. He also contacted the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which conducted the investigation.
The facility received fines and other corrective actions.
In his pending lawsuit, Waddell seeks unspecified compensation damages. He is seeking a ju trial to settle the claim.
