While DISCOVER focuses on exploration, ELEVATE takes a more targeted approach, helping students complete their college education while helping them secure full-time employment.

“Both programs provide students, especially those attending community colleges and four-year universities, with an entryway into the health care field.” Villegas said. “The goal is to provide students with real-world experiences and connections that will help them make informed decisions about their future careers.”

Cedars-Sinai leaders hope to attract students from Los Angeles' diverse communities to both programs.

“We want our future workforce to truly reflect the incredible diversity of Los Angeles.” Nicole Mitchell, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Cedars-Sinai, said:

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, As of 2022only 5.7% of practicing physicians in the United States are Black and 6.9% Hispanic, even though these groups make up a much larger portion of the U.S. population.

Mr. Sanchez recently earned a master's degree in biomedical sciences from California Baptist University and is pursuing a career as a physician assistant. He says the program gave him a unique opportunity to understand the healthcare industry.

“This was my first medical experience and being able to see how a hospital like Cedars-Sinai operates was invaluable,” Sanchez said. “It helps you make connections and find out how the healthcare field works.”

Anupa Roshan, a nursing educator at Cedars-Sinai and department supervisor at Contreras College, emphasizes the importance of mentorship. “I want to support students like Ashley by fostering a curiosity about medicine and providing opportunities to practice safe patient care in a real-world setting.”
