Transforming the healthcare industry, enhancing access, expanding the workforce, and harness technology were some of the key topics discussed at the 15th Becker annual meeting in Chicago.

The four-day meeting featured Sanford Health leaders, including Nick Olson, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Sanford Health, president and CEO of Sanford Fargo, president and CEO of Todd Shaffer, president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck, and president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck.

Olson joined Becker's Healthcare to discuss how Sanford Health is driving access, quality and sustainability in rural America.

He said it's important for the organization to bring that country voice.

“I think it's very important that Sanford Health is involved in the discussion as its large, rural integrated delivery system at such a large conference where there are many other health systems, providers, payers and long-term care providers,” Nick Olson told Sanford Health News in a virtual interview.

Lawrence took part in the opening panel focusing on the key leadership skills and strategies needed for healthcare CEOs to navigate the rapidly changing landscape.

“I was really proud to hear about our work from AI, virtual, labor and a rural lens,” Lawrence told Sanford Health News. “It had an impact, and we do great things at a level where we can share our work as well as the large urban systems.

“It's about transparency and engagement, whether it's with staff, employees, doctors, advanced practice experts, and it's really about it being out in that community, sharing our stories and what we're doing for our patients.

Training and maintaining rural healthcare workers

Dr. Schaffer joined the CEO trio to discuss key trends that will shape the future of healthcare, including leveraging the benefits of integration and technology to expand access.

Dr. Schaffer highlighted three key strategies in Bismarck, North Dakota. This includes access to workforce initiatives, care and charity.

Dr. Hoody's panel focuses on how clinical leaders can drive organizational transformation by fostering collaboration between medical staff, managers and technology providers.

One of the questions focuses specifically on access as a care issue.

“When I think about access to Sanford Bemidji, there are a few things that come to mind,” Dr. Hoodie said.

He said the very foundation of access is staffing:

Active and enthusiastic clinical staff providing education to trainees, residents and providers through a rural lens, pays close attention to workforce gaps and expected retirements in Minnesota and rural America.

He hopes to retire a third of rural clinicians within the next five to ten years.

“We are truly optimistic about strategies to improve our ability to recruit and retain clinicians in Bemidji,” he added.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Sanford Health Leader has attended Becker's annual general meeting.
