Marking VE Day 2025: Honouring Heroes, Remembering Sacrifices

Today May 8, across the United Kingdom, we pause to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a deeply significant occasion that commemorates the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8 May 1945. Now, 80 years on, care homes and communities nationwide are coming together to honour the courage, resilience, and immense sacrifices made by the men and women who served their country in countless ways.

From the soldiers on the front lines to the codebreakers, medics, nurses, factory workers, land girls and volunteers on the home front, we remember them all with gratitude and reverence. Many of our residents lived through those days – some served in uniform, others kept Britain going under blackout and ration. Each has a story that deserves to be remembered and retold.

In care homes this week, we’ve seen heartwarming scenes of celebration – tea dances, coffee mornings, wartime singalongs, Union flag bunting, and reminiscence sessions that bridge generations. These moments not only keep history alive but bring joy and pride to residents and staff alike.

We want to hear from you! As we reflect on this momentous day, we’re putting together a special VE Day supplement for next week’s issue. We warmly invite all care homes and residential settings to send us photos, stories, quotes from residents, and snapshots of your VE Day celebrations. Whether it’s a quiet moment of remembrance or a full-scale garden party, your contributions help us celebrate and preserve these shared memories.

Please email your VE Day stories and photos to VEDay@thecareruk.com by noon on Tuesday 13th May, and join us in honouring those who gave so much.

Together, we remember.
Together, we celebrate.
Together, we say: Thank you.
