Miami twp. Police praised fire rescue in nursing homes and saved the life of a choking boy.

Each residents needed “extreme assistance” to evacuate the fire, and each officer had to physically lift, support and make the residents safe, McCarty said.

“The officers worked well as a team, not just Miami Twp executives, but multiple jurisdictions responded to their support,” he said. “Bear, without the courage of our officers, I am sure some other residents have been injured.”

Also recognized were the officers of Matthew Randolph, Cody Lee and Daniel Schweicart, who saved the life of a six-year-old boy for their heroes.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that the boy would not respond without breathing, and his face turned purple, McCarty said.

“The officers worked diligently to administer reverse blows and abdominal thrusts, and eventually cleared Cameron's airways and restored breathing ability,” Miami told Miami Twp. Council meetings during a recent meeting.

The boy was taken to Miami Valley EMS to Dayton Children's Hospital, where he received treatment and recovered in full recovery, he said.

“My mother came to the police station… to express her firm belief that without these officers' efforts, her son would have died,” McCarty said.

The incident also highlighted the need for suffocation prevention equipment, leading to the department purchasing LifeVac devices. This said McCarty helped save 1,400 and 900 children nationwide.

All Miami twp. The police cruiser is currently equipped with a device, and all officers are trained in how to use it, he said.
