PIERRE, S.D.D. (As of Dakota News) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Friday that a Pierre woman has been charged with counting six felony counts of fraudulent South Dakota Medicaid program.

Sharon Laray Monson, 48, is accused of stealing more than $588,000 in federal and state funds as Pierre's home care owner.

“The defendant is accused of using people who needed this type of service and relied on Medicaid to pay for it,” Attorney General Jackley said.

The crime took place from May 1, 2018 to January 1, 2024.

Monson is accused of three counts of illegally obtaining benefits or payments from the medical assistance program, one of which is aggravated massive theft, perjury to obtain state benefits, and failure to maintain the necessary records under a Medicaid claim.

If convicted in all six cases, Monson faces a 42-year prison sentence.

The defendant has not yet appeared in the first court and is presumed innocent under the US Constitution.
