In early March, 75 enthusiastic students from four local elementary schools and two high schools participated in a unique, hands-on learning experience at Warren Memorial Hospital.

During their stay at WMH, students had no practical experience in operating Da Vinci and Mako's surgical systems. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, students ran the Da Vinci robotic arms and simulated actual surgical procedures. They demonstrated impressive hand and eye adjustments when wrapping candies, and performed other delicate tasks with high accuracy using robotic equipment. This interactive experience helped us understand the excellent controls these advanced technologies offer.

The event, which aimed to inspire the next generation of medical professionals, challenged students to suggest names for each robot. Two students from Leslie Fox Keeser Elementary School provided the victory name. Avery Bass chose “Apollo” for Da Vinc Xi. Adrian Hunter presents Mako with “Mr. Armstrong.”

Additionally, students toured the hospital and engaged in lively discussions with care providers and clinical leaders. Students asked insightful questions about the capabilities and benefits of robot-assisted surgery and gained valuable knowledge of how these techniques are changing modern surgical care. WMH administrator Jennifer Coero held a Q&A session with a group of fifth graders at lunchtime, and it proved to be a rather enthusiastic and curious bunch of bunch!

Direct interactions with clinical professionals provided students with a deeper understanding of and understanding the innovative tools and techniques used in healthcare today, and many aspects related to the operation of local hospitals.

The event was also covered on WHSV TV3 and ran on Evening News!
