NMC to begin surveying registrants annually on their experiences

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is launching a new annual survey of its registrants to find out their experiences in the workplace and their views of the regulator.

The NMC said the findings would be used to inform its regulatory work and that they would also be shared with other organisations that influence nurses’ working environments.

“This will help us to strengthen the evidence base for how we regulate”

Emma Westcott

The survey will ask registrants about their experiences at work over the last year, any barriers they have faced to delivering good care, their next career steps and how well they think the NMC is performing as a regulator.

As well as the survey of registrants, the NMC will also be launching a new annual survey of the public to learn about their experiences of nursing and midwifery care.

Emma Westcott, acting executive director of strategy and insight at the NMC, said: “It’s vital that the NMC roots its work in the experiences of people who provide and receive nursing and midwifery care.

“As the independent regulator of more than 841,000 nurses, midwives and nursing associates, we’re uniquely placed to hear from professionals across the UK.

“Our survey will provide invaluable insight, and we strongly encourage everyone on our register to make their voices heard.

“This will help us to strengthen the evidence base for how we regulate and inform our work with others who shape the context for health and care delivery.”

The NMC will begin emailing the survey to nurses, midwives and nursing associates this week and will collect responses until 17 April 2025.

It will be sent to all registrants except those who previously recorded that they did not want to be contacted about research or those who have already received a pilot version of the survey.

The announcement comes as the NMC has embarked on a programme of change to try and improve in the wake of damning independent findings about its internal culture.
