EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — An El Paso woman has been sentenced to five years in prison in El Paso federal court for conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
Edelmira Marquez, 59, was involved in billing fraud as the owner of Marquez Medical Supply, a durable medical equipment company in El Paso, according to court documents.
Marquez's scheme involved providing substitute lower value items to Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries/patients and then billing Medicaid and Medicare for the higher value items.
The items were mainly incontinence products such as adult diapers, wipes, and bed liners.
She made her first appearance on January 19, 2024 and was released on bond.
She pleaded guilty to a single charge on March 7.
After sentencing, Marquez was returned to federal custody.
In addition to the jail term, Marquez was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay $1,739,608.59 in restitution to Medicaid.
