Birdtown, Ky. (Wave) – Sixteen people inside a Birdtown nursing home are being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at the facility this morning.
Burdstown firefighters were called to the landmark nursing home at 6:37am, and the first crew members found through the window arrived. Some firefighters fought the fire, while others joined the landmark staff and police on evacuating residents.
The fire was controlled within minutes and did not enter the building's attic. Fire Investigators said the fire was caused by an electrical failure within the HVAC unit.
Milt Spalding, a spokesman for Nelson County Emergency Management, said 13 residents and three staff members needed treatment, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. In addition to residents, one Bardstown police officer was also suffering from inhaling smoke and was taken to hospital.
A bus from a Nelson County school was brought to nursing homes to take 21 residents to a landmark facility in Louisville.
