A group of healthcare and pharmaceutical companies are working together to invest in multi-buyer power purchase agreements for upcoming utility scale solar farms to be built in Spain.

The Energize Initiative is a collaboration with companies that have acquired 245 GWH of renewable energy over the course of the PPA's 10 years. These companies within the Energize Group include Haleon, GSK, Gilead Sciences and Thermo Fisher Scientific. The investment focuses on future outputs of developer X-Elio's Lorca Solar Project, which is expected to be operated in early 2026.

Schneider Electric served as an advisor to the Energize Group, helping businesses to offset their energy use and promote PPAs that help them avoid over 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

“The Energize program aims to promote supply chain carbonization across the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, but as it aims to tackle the most notorious and challenging aspects of decarbonization, other sectors are employed. It acts as a playbook for Schneider Electric.

Thermo Fisher Scientific served as the key negotiator to support the group of companies during PPA negotiations, combining investments in the supply of renewable electricity.

The first part of the Energize Multi-Buyer PPA was announced in September 2024. The first contract accounted for 563 GWH of renewable electricity over a decade.

“Collaboration can amplify impact and promote meaningful change by achieving environmental sustainability goals and partnering with like-minded organizations.” “This initiative will be a 2040 initiative. It is an important part of our goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions from source to sales by the time we go.”

The largest estimated emissions driver in the pharmaceutical and health sector is the supply chain, which accounts for more than 50% of emissions. The 24 pharmaceutical and healthcare companies managed by Schneider Electric sponsor the Energize program to provide free, renewable electricity education and procurement support to suppliers. This support allows suppliers with solid steps to achieve their decarbonization goals.

A multibuyer PPA aggregates the electricity demands of multiple organizations into a single contract. According to Schneider Electric, the structure allows more companies to access renewable energy investments and reduce costs.

The Energize Healthcare Multi-Buyer PPA accounts for approximately 35% of X-Elio's Lorca Solar Project. Lorca is estimated to generate 369 MW of capacity if operational in early 2026.

Reports show that the healthcare industry accounts for almost 5% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. According to a group report and research partner Arup of Health Care of Health Care by Harma, the US healthcare sector is the industry's No. 1 Emitter, earning more than 50 times the emissions of the Indian sector.
